History and Reputation

Safety Striping Service, Inc. is a closely held family business established in Santa Barbara in 1950. We are the oldest “highway improvement contractor” also known as striping contractor, in California. Our Tulare County branch was established in 1953. Due to its Central California location and it being historically our largest branch, corporate headquarters was moved to Visalia (Goshen) in 1994.

The Company was founded by Ellery Wilson and his stepson, Kenneth Spitler, in Santa Barbara County. David Preston, Kenneth’s son-in-law, joined the company in 1993 and became president in 1994.

David and his late wife, Louisa, purchased the stock in 2001The company maintains a satellite operation in a Santa Paula industrial park for staging materials and equipment for Southern California projects.

In recent years, Safety Striping has successfully weathered the economic downturn of 2008 and continues to grow with additional employees, state-of-the-art equipment and technology which provides improved safety, quality and efficiency on our projects.

Safety Striping is well-known statewide for quality and service to its customers, while maintaining an excellent safety record. The company has completed projects statewide, as well as a few in neighboring Nevada and Arizona. Maintaining a good working relationship with LIUNA (Laborers International Union of North America) has become an essential part of the business. Safety Striping is signatory to and in good standing with both the Northern and Southern California Laborer Unions. David serves on AGC’s Union Contractor Committee as chair of Northern California negotiations and serves on the Negotiating Committee with the Southern Laborers. He also serves as a management trustee on the Stripers & Highway Maintenance Apprenticeship Trust and Apprenticeship Committee.
